Monitoring with M/Monit on OpenBSD

       272 words, 2 minutes

You may have already seen my Running Monit v5 on OpenBSD article. If not, it’s the correct time to have a look at it :) This article will describe how to install and run M/Monit. Quoting its Web site, “M/Monit expand upon Monit’s capabilities to provide monitoring and management of all Monit enabled hosts from one easy to use web-interface”. Monit has an efficient Web interface, M/Monit has a shinning one. It also has reports abilities that will please your IT CEO ;-) I’ll show how to run both on a single OpenBSD box.

Build an USB Powered Fan

       432 words, 3 minutes

I’m keeping an eye on the temperature of my Dell Inspiron Mini 1012. And since it is powered-on again, according to Munin and the cpu0_temp0 / cpu1_temp0 counters, it runs at an average temperature of 59°C. This is quite a bit hot ; especially when I now it is supposed to have a TDP of 5.5 W and that the XPS M1330 is about 45°C. The Mini is fanless! This is why I bought it and also probably the reason why it is that hot stored in a shoes cupboard with no air flow. So, I’m gonna give him some air turning an unused internal PC Fan into a brand new USB Powered Fan.

NetBSD and SpeedStep on the Atom N450

       293 words, 2 minutes

My Dell Inspiron Mini 10 ships with an Intel Atom N450. Right now, TuM’Fatig is running on an USB disk plugged in the XPS M1330. So the Mini is in testing mode. Today was the day when I checked the status of NetBSD’s SpeedStep implementation on N450. Sadly, NetBSD 5.1_STABLE still does not support it ; NetBSD 5.99.55 knows about it though.

Compare CPU speed and heat

       344 words, 2 minutes

I used to run my I.T. services on an AIRIS N1110 shipping an Intel(R) Core(TM)2 T7400 @2.16GHz. It was quite nice, fast and silent. In fact, I noticed that this processor was used in MacBook and iMac Late-2006 ; which might indicate that this processor is quite optimal regarding performance and speed ratio. Since that computer died, I switched my services from spare hardware to spare hardware. I was never really convinced to have found a “nice” replacement hardware. So I’m looking at purchasing a new one. From my experience, what really counts in the speed/heat ratio are the CPU and the motherboard. The CPU will enable performance depending on cores and frequency and will generate heat depending on its TDP (Thermal Design Power). The motherboard will enable performance depending on its design and mostly depending on the RAM it can support.

Téléphone DECT GAP et Freebox Revolution

       319 words, 2 minutes
