My ESXi v5 runs on a Mini-ITX Z68 motherboard with Intel Core i5 2500T (Quad core). I choose this because I wanted to have a silent (fanless) and low consumption box. The box runs quite well. I have an EeePC 900 that does nothing for a long time now. My mother asked me for a laptop that she would travel with ; just for reading emails and surfing the Web. That sounds perfect for this machine. I initially planned to install Windows 7 on it so that it’s the same OS than on her workstation PC. The 8GB internal SSD is really to small to run Windows 7 (even running XP is annoying because of Windows Updates) so I decided to install a 1.8" SSD using a ZIF adapter.

I find my MacBook Pro mid-2009 quite slow when rendering my personal H.264. I would like to see if the Sandy Bridge Core i5 2500T in my hypervisor does a better job. So I installed Mac OS X Lion as a virtual machine on my ESXi v5.

For those who may not know, the “Freebox Revolution” is the 6th release of the access box from the French ADSL/FTTH provider named “Free”. In my case, it provides Internet access via FTTH. The box has a Web management interface from where you can configure and check statistics. The only “sad” news is that it does not provide any SNMP service. The only way to keep a eye on what goes through the ports is to log on the Web interface.

The Freebox Revolution has a nice management GUI which provides metrics about in/out traffic. Unfortunately, it can only be seen from the management pages when you’ve been authenticated.
